MAIL THEFT

What to do and watch for to prevent mail theft - and what to do if your mail is stolen

MailTheft-FEDERALCRIME-640x120

Mail theft has become rampant not only in our neighborhood, but in the entire country. There are ways a neighborhood and its residents can protect themselves.

Here are a few tips.

1. Do not let your mail sit in your mailbox overnight or for days. Promptly retrieve your mail on every mail delivery day. In cases where you have a community cluster mailbox, help make sure your neighbors do the same.

2. Do not place your outgoing mail in your mailbox unless you are certain it will be picked up by your mail carrier before the day ends. Better still, hand your outgoing mail directly to your mail carrier, or deposit it at the post office.

3. Whenever you have a chance, talk to your mail carrier - know his delivery schedule. Tell your mail carrier about unusual behavior or activity around the mailbox.

4. Alert the post office if you will be out of town so your mail can be held at the post office until you return.

5. Be alert - watch your neighborhood mailboxes for suspicious characters and activities. Report loitering or strange behavior around your mailboxes.

6. If you witness mail theft in progress - or if you believe that mail has been stolen or a mailbox broken into - call the police and then call the USPIS Postal Inspector at 877-876-2455 (and select or press option 3).
