Eden Shores homeowners help protect endangered mice

Protecting The Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse

‘Harvest mouse’ protected from predator hawks, racoons, etc.

One little known fact to many Eden Shores homeowners and residents - especially those who had moved into the community more recently - is that they help finance the protection of a wildlife specie along the wetlands known as the salt marsh harvest mouse (scientific name: Reithrodontomys reviventris).

The harvest mouse is included in the State and Federal Endangered Species Act. As a condition for the development of the Eden Shores communities, builder Standard Pacific agreed to commit the community homeowners’ association to finance the species’ protection with a $27,000 annual payment to the California Department of Fish & Games.

Known as the Animal and Predator Control Program, the effort would permanently protect the mouse and its habitat along the Eden Landing Ecological Preserve to assure the conservation, restoration, and long-term survival of the species. For this, Standard Pacific and the Eden Shores HOA agreed to undertake mitigation measures that includes offsetting any adverse impact to salt marsh harvest mice that may be caused by the subdivision development.
